“A miracle?”
Agia Theodora Vasta is a small Byzantine church with 17 holly and maple trees growing on its roof. Most of them are over 30 meters tall, which is phenomenal, as only a single root the thickness of an arm is visible near the entrance.
Even more astonishing is its tiny barrel-vaulted interior where, apart from a small patch of greenery, there is not a single trace of trees or roots. Another fascinating fact is that a river flows beneath the church and irrigates the trees. Scientists have taken X-rays of the church walls, which show no signs of root growth. High-frequency ground-penetrating radar has also indicated that the roots are all as thin as hairs and that they grow within the church walls to draw water from the spring below.
