METEORA

Meteora is a rock formation located in the Trikala regional unit of Thessaly, in northwestern Greece. It is home to one of the most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, considered locally second only to Mount Athos. Twenty-four monasteries were established atop the giant natural pillars and rounded, hill-like rocks that dominate the area, primarily from the second half of the 14th century onward.

Meteora is situated between the town of Kalabaka and the village of Kastraki, on the northwestern edge of the Thessalian Plain, near the Pineios River and the Pindus Mountains.

The Meteora complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 due to its exceptional architecture and beauty, combined with its religious and cultural significance.
